👉 A bit of your background ?
I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from Politecnico di Torino, in Italy.
Before starting my V.I.E 10 months ago with ALTEN, I had some previous background in manufacturing engineering in the aerospace industry.
👉 What is your current position and what are your responsibilities at ALTEN?
I am currently working as a certification qualification engineer. I am responsible for preparing the technical documentation required to certify the civil changes done to commercial helicopters for a client based in Donauwörth, Germany.
Some of my daily tasks include :
Communicating and collaborating with different teams,
Gathering all the technical documentation required for these changes,
Ensuring compliance with the certification standards and with the European legislation.
👉 What motivated you to choose a V.I.E, and why with ALTEN?
I was looking for an international experience that would push me out of my comfort zone and I believe that the V.I.E program is the best way to do that.
I chose ALTEN in particular because of their excellence and innovation in the aerospace industry and I also believe that the company values and the working environment were very aligned with what I was looking for.
👉 How did your adaptation to the local culture go ?
Adapting to the local culture has been an overall positive experience. Thanks to my team, I have always felt supported since day 1 and they have really helped me understand and integrate better into the workplace and in the overall local culture.
The biggest challenge so far is the language barrier because I came here with a very limited knowledge in German.
An important challenge you can face in the first months of an international career is adapting to a new professional and cultural environment at the same time, from understanding new technical terms in a multilingual context, to adapting to different communication styles. This has made me stay flexible and open-minded at the same time, which I believe are essential qualities for any international career.
👉 How has this experience changed your view of work or your career ?
This experience has taught me how broad the aerospace industry is. When I first arrived, I had a more limited view regarding the career paths available but as time went on, I began to recognize and understand the different roles and the complexity behind the scenes. This has made me feel more prepared to take on new challenges and new tasks.
At first, some of the certification topics I was involved in felt a little complex. However, thanks to the guidance of my colleagues we were able to push the project forward, reaching important certification milestones.
Being part of a project from the creation to its final certification has been a very rewarding experience for me, especially after the initial obstacles I faced.
👉 What are your career prospects after the end of your V.I.E?
So far, I have really enjoyed the work that I have been doing alongside my team, and I hope to continue to grow and build on what I have learnt in this field. Ideally, I would like to continue developing my skills in such a stimulating and international environment.
👉Why would you recommend the V.I.E. at ALTEN to other young graduates ?
ALTEN has been extremely supportive since the beginning. I have always felt their presence, support and involvement throughout the whole process. Sharing a space, sharing a team with people that were in the past V.I.E or there are currently V.I.E has really helped me integrate into this new experience and new part of my life. I am glad to say that I never felt alone.
👉 What advice would you give to someone who is considering a V.I.E ?
Take the leap, enjoy the challenge and do not be afraid to put yourself in new scenarios, as it has been an experience that I am very thankful for.
